In order for you to do refrigeration and conditioning work in NSW, you need to have a license, except when you only need to plug-in household appliances. A license is needed no matter the cost of the project and whether the job is commercial, residential, or industrial. Also, business people who work with refrigerants are required to get a Commonwealth Government refrigerant handling license issued by the Australian Refrigeration Council.

What is Air conditioning work?

any work that requires installing, maintaining and servicing an air-conditioner system (apart from single-phase, self-contained plug-in home air-conditioner system, like portable air conditioners used at home) in a vessel, structure, building, railway vehicle or container.

In order to meet the requirements contained in Australian Standard AS 1668.2 – 2002, Use of air conditioning and ventilation in buildings, & Part 2: Indoor air contaminant ventilation design control.

What is Refrigeration work?

Any work required in installing, maintaining and servicing refrigeration systems (apart from the self-contained plug-in single-phase domestic refrigeration system, like fridges used at home) in a building, structure, vessel, vehicle or container.

Work needed in order to comply with New Zealand/Australian Standards AS/NZS 1677:1998, electrical work related to refrigerating Systems.

Also, you will need a license to permit you to do electrical wiring that is related to air con and refrigeration work.

Conditioning And Refrigeration Work:

  • tests and diagnosing problems in power and control circuits, electric motors and electrical equipment
  • Reconnect and disconnect electrical components intended to be connected permanently.
  • replacing electrical components held on the load-side of a mains source
  • Adjust and repair (following regular practices) electrical components
  • repairing, replacing or making good cable terminations or correcting defective electrical wiring
  • minor electrical wiring changes.

Note: it’s an offence to carry out the air conditioner and refrigeration jobs without a certificate or licence. You risk being fined $22,000 for an individual or $110,000 for a company if doing unlicensed work.

Electrical work

You require to have an electrical license prior to doing any electrical wiring jobs in NSW, irrespective of how much the work costs and whether it is residential, industrial or commercial work.

Electrical wiring means the physical work of repairing, installing, altering, adding or removing electrical installations or supervision of such work.

The electrical installation refers to any wires, fixed appliances, fittings, apparatus, meters, or other equipment related to or used for controlling, conveying, measuring, and using electricity in a place. This doesn’t include:

  • any electrical equipment besides a meter used or meant to be used, in transmitting, generating or distributing

electricity which is:

  • Used or owned by a power supply authority, or
  • Placed at an area occupied or owned by a power company
  • any electrical equipment connected to, situated beyond and extending, any power outlets
  • any power equipment around or in a mine
  • any power equipment running at 50 volts and below in alternating current or a 120 volts direct current ripple-free equipment
  • other electrical equipment, and a class of power equipment, ordained by the regulations.

In NSW, all security companies (whether corporate entities or sole traders) must have a Master Licence. This also permits them to employ accredited security personnel.

You require this license when you wish to run a business that offers and engages people in security activities. The Master license can be obtained by government agencies, individuals, or corporations.

  • Performing duties of a bodyguard
  • Working in the capacity of a crowd controller
  • Patrolling, guarding, or protecting any property
  • Repairing, installing, servicing or maintaining security equipment
  • Selling security principles, methods, or equipment
  • Offering advice related to security risks or security equipment
  • Offering instructions or training related to any aspect of security activity
  • Assessing other people's competence to do security activities
  • Negotiating or even obtaining contracts related to security personnel or activities
  • Carrying out locksmith activities.
